It’s personal

NZ House & Garden, Resene / Colour expert

Seeing clients embrace a colour scheme makes Resene colour consultant Jill Marsh happy.

Working out of the Resene ColorShop in Dunedin, Jill Marsh gets a thrill out of seeing the results of her projects.

What effect does paint colour have on an interior?

Colour is really important to interior design and home decor. Not only does it influence human emotions, but it is also the quickest way to instantly change a room. A coat of paint can dramatically change interiors, and can also camouflage design problems and other defects. Colour is a great way for clients to personalise their spaces whether it’s with fun colours for children or peaceful greens for relaxation.

Why do you love working with colour?

I love that every job is different whether it be a new build or a heritage property. Listening to what a client is aiming to achieve and seeing the finished result is wonderful. It can be very overwhelming for the client as they navigate all the options but I have the best paint colours to work with, from the Resene fashion colours to the Resene Whites & Neutrals fandeck. The highlight is when I meet up with clients again and they are delighted with the finished look.

What’s your advice on creating a colour scheme?

Look for images with colours that you like and build a folder of ideas. You will find that a pattern emerges. Choose the most expensive items first like kitchen benchtops and flooring, then add Resene colour on the cabinets, walls and trims. Always check your favourite colours with Resene testpots.

What are your three favourite Resene colours and why?

Resene White Pointer is a stark off-white with a hint of black so is versatile and works in many spaces.

Resene Coast is a fabulous option for a feature wall. It looks great behind a television or a fire or used as the feature colour in a bedroom.

Resene Upside is a gorgeous tranquil blue from the latest Resene fashion range, ideal for adding colour to bathrooms and it looks great with Resene White Pointer.
